Informationsarchitektur Information architecture

Wo erwarten Ihre Nutzer welche Informationen? Where do your users expect which information? I develop logical structures and clear navigation that follow your users' mental models — for software that doesn't need explaining. Based in Munich, working remotely across Germany.

Why don't users find features even though they exist?

Because the software's structure usually follows the company's internal logic — departments, modules, history — not the users' logic. The user thinks in tasks ("I want to correct an invoice"), the software thinks in systems ("Document management > master data"). This gap between mental model and system structure is the most common reason features remain invisible.

Was macht eine gute Informationsarchitektur aus? What makes a good information architecture?

You don't notice it. Users find things where they expect them, labels are unambiguous, hierarchies make sense, and similar things behave similarly. Good information architecture is not a matter of taste — it can be measured against user expectations and validated with methods like card sorting and tree testing.

How do I recognise that structure is the problem?

Typical symptoms: users constantly resort to search because navigation doesn't help. Support keeps answering "Where do I find…?" questions. New employees need weeks to find their way around. Content exists twice because nobody knew it was already there. If any of this sounds familiar, structure is a good starting point.

Wie entsteht eine Struktur, die mitwächst? How do you create a structure that scales?

By designing rules instead of solving individual cases. A good architecture defines the logic by which content and features are organised — so the next feature automatically has a clear place too. That's exactly what distinguishes a well-thought-out structure from one that becomes cluttered again after two years.

Ablauf Process

So läuft ein Informationsarchitektur-Projekt ab How an information architecture project works

  1. 1

Inventur & Analyse Inventory & analysis

Was ist alles da? What's there? I map content, features, and the existing structure — including its weak points.

  2. 2

    Nutzerlogik verstehen Understanding user logic

Using card sorting and interviews, I find out how your users mentally group information.

  3. 3

Strukturkonzept & Navigation Structure concept & navigation

I design hierarchies, labels, and navigation paths — as a set of rules, not one-off solutions.

  4. 4

    Validierung Validation

Using tree testing with real users, I verify: do they find what they're looking for — before anything gets rebuilt?

  5. 5

You receive the validated structure including its rules — directly usable for design and development.

Der Unterschied The difference

Suchen — Finden Searching — finding

Users resort to search because navigation doesn't help.
The structure matches expectations — users find instead of searching.
Neue Inhalte landen „irgendwo", weil es keinen klaren Platz gibt. New content ends up "somewhere" because there's no clear place.
Clear rules for where new things belong — the structure scales.
Lange Einarbeitungszeit für neue Nutzer und Mitarbeiter. Long onboarding time for new users and employees.
Selbsterklärende Hierarchien verkürzen das Onboarding deutlich. Self-explanatory hierarchies shorten onboarding significantly.
